For easy comparison, I wanted these two pictures side by side so i can point out differences.
On the left: Persephone is peering through an open window into the kitchen space. Despite the fact that it's dark outside, her pupils are smaller and less round than the picture on the right. She's feeling more relaxed. Her whiskers are much less tight; they aren't pulled as close to her face. Her ears are both facing forward.
her stance is more difficult to see clearly, but she's not pulled in on herself. She's less hunched up.
She's not fully relaxed, but she is feeling curious.
Right picture: Notice the ear that's flicked slightly back--- she's keeping a cautious ear out, just in case I get too close. She wants to be sure she's got a place to run to. Her pupils are fairly wide, even though it's very light so they don't need to be that big. She's feeling VERY nervous about my presence, but not quite enough to run away. Her whiskers are pulled pretty tightly back, indicating further unease.

so I'm going to make a post on cat body language since people keep catsplaining at me even though its literally part of my job. here is the cat from the post in question
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mr asshole man who likes to scratch people without warning
yes the pupils are dilated! good noticing!! cats' pupils dilate when they are fearful but also when theyre very interested in something
now take a look at the rest of him. he's at the front of the cage. his ears are perked forward rather than pressed back. his fur is flat. his whiskers are relaxed. he has his carrier provided for him to hide if he felt like it
with all that other information provided does it seem now that he's afraid?
no. this cat has his pupils dilated because he was VERY interested in what I was doing behind my phone
he may have been unhappy but he certainly wasnt traumatized or being mistreated

kitty body language experts i have a query (i have some general knowledge but i just want to be more certain)
one of our cats (lady) recently got desexed so we’ve kept her in a seperate room for about a week. when she first got back from the vet, the other (torvi) was pretty unfriendly (growling and hissing type) but they told us that was normal
now lady has been released from her room (!) and torvi is a bit in edge. i believe lady is trying to initiate playing (meowing, following, running at her, sniffing also) while torvi keeps avoiding her and trying to get away. there’s no hissing or growling from either of them, so i dont think its explicit aggression
sometimes lady runs at her and torvi sort of stares at her or backs off, and then lady will run or back away too
there was one moment where lady tried to jump on her and torvi moved back, so then they stood and stared at each other like cats do before they start fighting. but then lady semi-rolled over and started cleaning herself - which i believe is a submissive behaviour?
anyway im just curious on hearing some opinions cos the last thing i want is these two getting in a fight before lady’s fully healed :,) my understanding is that lady wants to play (she’s also very excited and running around the room, which i realise is not great for her stitches but what can ya do…) while torvi doesnt totally recognise her yet with all the vet/desex scents still lingering

Do cats feel cold? How can I tell if a cat feels cold?
When humans feel cold, we have several options to shelter ourselves and/or warm up the environment we’re in to stop feeling it. But have you ever wondered what happens to our pets when temperatures drop? Especially cats, who, unlike other furry animals, don’t have such thick fur or a double coat like dogs, for example. Do cats feel cold? This question and some other issues are what we will…

For the last time, this is because cats don’t show you their belly to ask for belly rubs
Cats are showing you their belly as a sign of TRUST, because it is their most vulnerable part. They are showing it because they trust you not to attack them.
By trying to touch their belly, you could be violating that trust.
Some cats may enjoy or be ambivalent to belly rubs, but as a general rule of thumb, don’t touch their bellies unless you know them and know they enjoy it. Cats scratch to assert their boundaries, so make sure to listen when they do.
You can’t treat a cat like a dog and be mad when they don’t respond the same way.

Prompt 96
Bruce squinted up at the older kid, frowning. Oh sure they didn’t look like a kid, and honestly had a ridiculous-looking suit of some sort, but he could tell. And seeing as he was in an unknown place- without Alfred- with several people after him- nothing new, he was the lone Wayne now after all- he figured it would be safer to stick together.
Billy on the other hand, is inwardly sweating when baby de-aged batman comes sprinting around the corner and glares up at him for what feels like an eternity before ducking beneath his cape with a hissed “Hide me from those weirdos” Um. Okay, what is he supposed to do now in this situation???

[ID: A photo of a black kitten standing on a yellow blanket, standing sideways with its ears pinned down, its back arched, tail curled at the base and pointed down, all its fur fluffed up and standing on end, opening its mouth in a hiss, staring at something out of sight behind and below the camera. End ID.]
correction: This cat is so scared it became a perfect science demonstration. Cats do this when they're afraid, not when they're angry. They do this to make themselves look bigger than they actually are so that whatever they're doing it at thinks twice about attacking them.
if your cat starts doing this, stop whatever you're doing. I can only assume there was a dog or something off camera to scare it so severely.
This is not an "angry" kitten. This is a terrified kitten that is feeling threatened by something behind the camera.
Like, this cat isn't inherently in danger because it's a kitten, so it might be scared like this by something that's not actually dangerous, but it's still not something that should be treated as though it's cute or the kitten is "angry". It's not angry, it's scared, and there is an important difference.
